Every day, we wake up, go to work or school, grab a quick breakfast, buy a takeaway coffee, receive a few online orders… And in those familiar moments, waste quietly appears.

A plastic cup used for 5 minutes.
A plastic bag for food.
A foam box, a straw, a used face mask.

We often think: “It’s just a little waste.” But what many don’t realize is that these “small pieces of waste” never truly disappear. They simply leave our sight — and begin a journey that directly impacts human health.

TOXIC WASTE IS NOT JUST DIRTY — IT’S DANGEROUS

Household waste, especially plastic and medical waste, decomposes very slowly when not properly treated. During this process, it releases microplastics, heavy metals, and toxic gases into the air, soil, and water.

These substances can:

  • Enter our daily food

  • Affect the respiratory and digestive systems

  • Accumulate over time, increasing the risk of hormonal disorders and chronic diseases

The alarming part is: we may not feel it immediately, but our bodies do.

WHEN WASTE RETURNS TO OUR MEALS

Plastic waste in the environment breaks down into microplastics, which flow into rivers and oceans. Fish consume microplastics. Sea salt contains microplastics. Vegetables grown in polluted soil are no longer as “clean” as we think.

Eventually, microplastics return to our dining tables.
According to various studies, people may unknowingly ingest microplastics every day. It is a silent cycle — but a very real one.

HEALTH DOES NOT ONLY EXIST IN HOSPITALS

We often think about health only when we get sick, when we need checkups or treatment. In reality, health begins with the environment around us — where we breathe, eat, and live every day.

A neighborhood filled with accumulated waste.
A dark, foul-smelling canal.
An illegal dump near residential areas.

All of these are long-term “sources of disease” that directly affect communities, especially children and the elderly.

SMALL CHANGES — BIG IMPACT

Not everyone can do something big for the environment. But everyone can start with small actions:

  • Reduce the use of single-use plastics

  • Sort waste at the source whenever possible

  • Do not litter, even “just a little”

  • Choose environmentally friendly products

When multiplied by a community, these small actions can create real change.

PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT IS PROTECTING OURSELVES

Waste is not far away.
It is all around us — and it directly affects our health.

When we become more mindful of how we dispose of waste, we are also taking care of our own health and the well-being of those around us — today and in the future.
